Gable Style Roof

The average home owner has a Gable roof on his home and probably does not know it. The roof is an extremely common and popular type of roofing. The gable style roof consists of two equal sized roof panels at the same angle. The angle and the size of the roof does not matter. A home can have more than one gable style roof at different architectures. The design is easy to build and stable in many areas. There are situations where the building code discourages this simple type of architecture. Homes built in areas where high winds are common are more likely to use the hip style roof.

A high angled gable roof does provide protections from certain hazards. The high angled gable roofs prevent snow and ice from piling up on top of the roof. The design lets built up snow and ice fall off the roof. Falling snow and ice may cause problems for people on the ground. The debris may add to the home owner’s work of clearing the snow and ice in the winter. The snow and ice may obstruct the sidewalks or rest harmlessly in the front or backyard. The design allows rain water to slide gently off the roof and be collected by the gutters or a similar system.

The gable style roof is a relatively simple to install, the high angled roofs were more common in the past than they are today. This is not because areas get less snow than they used to, as some older people might claim, but because the less steep angles make the homes more efficient to heat. The greater energy efficiency reduces heating and cooling bills. The slope of the roof is only one part of an efficient insulation design. The design of the roof is not the only thing that effects heating and cooling efficiency. Insulation helps energy efficiency the most, but the color of the shingles also affects how much energy the house loses.

This style of roof is noted for its flexibility. It is also noted for its ease of design. A contractor can easily put the roof together with a window in a room sticking out. The window is more for looks than anything else. The occupants of the room can look out onto the street, yard, or other items out the window with relative ease. The onlookers on the other side can admire the way the pieces fit together, if he is inclined to do so.

The homeowner may decide to build his home with a gable style roof when he buys the home. If he lives in an area prone to high winds, he may choose a hip style roof instead. The home owner having his home built needs to make sure that the local building codes are followed. The contractor should research the codes before he begins work on any large project.
